Revealing the Heart of God in the Heart City

Welcome to the good news of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

We invite you to worship and fellowship at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Times have changed and so do our livesBut our text for today, Hebrews 13:1-8, tells us that there is one thing that does not change. The unchanging thing in our lives is our loving Lord. The author quotes the Lord’s words in Deuteronomy,  “Never will I leave you;  never will I forsake you.” And he says himself, 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.  So as we face changing times, and changes in our lives, let’s remember… Jesus Christ Is the Same, So We Are to Be Different. We are to be… different in how we treat each other ... different from the world, and ... different in the end result of our lives.

Anytime we look at God’s Word, a good approach is to ask ourselves, what do these verses say about me, and secondly, what do they say about God? The opening verses of this chapter say we should love one another. … love the Lord your God, and love your neighbor. Certainly these verses remind us of the debt of love we have to others.

You’ve heard the expression, “You don’t really know man until you walk a mile in his shoes.” That expression asks us to try and understand what someone else might be going through each day… and the expression assumes that if we consider that, it might change how we see them. So these verses encourage us to think how we might be of assistance to our brothers and sisters in the faith.

Those who live by the principles of the world know only how to take care of themselves. But Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, makes us want to be different. He makes us want to love our neighbor and our family in Christ. And he makes us view many things differently from the world. God has given us what we need. And he will always do that… Never will I leave you;  never will I forsake you.

Jesus Christ Is the Same, So We Are to be Different in regards to the end result of our lives. That confidence and trust in God will be evident in our lives especially at the end. We know where we will be at when we keep our faith in our unchanging Savior. We’ll be in heaven not hell. We can have confidence even in the face of death. We face so many changes in life, we need something sure and certain. Our Lord fits the bill nicely. Jesus Christ Is the Same, So We Are to Be Different.

Reaching out with hand and heart
We are here to do our part.
.
Jesus told us we should go
To share Him with all we know.
.
We're too young to go abroad
To share the message of our God.
.
But we can smile and speak with you
From our Sunday church pew.
.
We're going to practice our simple greeting
So it might be you that we are meeting.
.
We may be quiet or we may be shy
Please be patient as we give it a try.
You may feel a tap or a little whisper
An "excuse me Miss" or maybe a "Mister."
.
We're going to politely give you our name
And kindly ask you to do the same.
.
That's how it starts this "going" you see
With an outstretched hand and a smile from me.
.
